Pumpkin Pie Day-- Have some pumpkin pie and do some caroling

On Christmas day, many Americans are enjoying time with family or friends, and don’t realize that National Pumpkin Pie Day happens to lie on the same day—Dec. 25.

While many Americans are celebrating Christmas, they seem to disregard the other holidays found on this day--National Pumpkin Pie Day is a day to be celebrated throughout all of America in which pumpkin pies are eaten.

“Often eaten during the fall and winter months and invited to Thanksgiving and Christmas tables, in the United States pumpkin pie is a traditional dessert,” said the article by Nationalholidaycalendar.com.

Pumpkin pie was originally made during the seventeenth century. Found in English cookbooks, such as, The Gentlewoman’s Companion, the pumpkin pie began to appear in American cookbooks almost 100 years later. Sometimes made in December, pumpkin pie is a great dessert to have while enjoying Christmas eve dinner.

Also baked in October, the pie consists of a pumpkin-based custard baked in a single pie shell. The pie is generally flavored with nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. This pie is often made from canned pumpkin or packaged pumpkin pie filling. It’s a seasonal product available in bakeries and grocery stores.

“I absolutely love pumpkin pie. It is my favorite dessert on Thanksgiving, but I had no idea National Pumpkin Pie Day was on Christmas,” said Madelyn Diago ‘22.

Interestingly enough, the song, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” contains the lyrics, “Later we’ll have some pumpkin pie and we’ll do some caroling.” Pumpkin pie has been a tradition for as long as anyone can remember.

For dessert, enjoy pumpkin pie every year on Dec. 25 to celebrate National Pumpkin Pie day.
