Track season highlights

As the first semester of the 2018-2019 school year comes to an end this means the start of many winter and spring sports are right around the corner.

After winter break the track and field athletes at Riverview will begin training for their season. Although track does not officially begin until February the athletes must start training and getting in shape for the upcoming season.

The runners at Riverview are very excited for track season to start up. Maya Aleman ’20 said “I’m excited to start training for track and working on getting my times faster. I feel like this will be the season for many personal records”. At Riverview, track and field athletes are very dedicated to their sport and work very hard at practice in order to improve at every meet.

Practices are every day after school, but the duration of practices depends on the event the athletes are training for. The athletes also spend late school nights at meets competing and watching their fellow runners.

At practice the athletes are split up into multiple groups which roughly include the short distance runners and hurdlers, long distance runners, jumpers, and throwers. T

he coaches are very good at making sure the athletes are able to be diverse and do multiple different events at the track meets. Allison Sharma ‘20 is a long-distance runner and said “I usually run the 800m or the mile but this year I want to try other events such as hurdles and steeplechase. I’ve never tried these events before but I’m really excited to try.”

Make sure you are there this track season to watch and support your fellow Riverview students. The athletes work very hard and are always improving which is very entertaining to watch. It is always better to see familiar faces in the bleachers as you are crossing the finish line.
