When Karson Ligon received the acknowledgement that he was selected to participate
in the 2020 Baseball Factory Under Armour All-Star Classic, there was no doubt that he was
ecstatic. Held at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas, this event hosted the top 40 players in the
nation for the class of 2021, so being part of that list was a prestigious accolade for Ligon.
A senior this year and member of the Riverview Rams’ Varsity baseball squad, the future is
glimmering for the two-way star. Standing sky-high at 6-foot-3 and weighing 190
pounds, Ligon, who is committed to the University of Miami on a baseball scholarship,
continued to prosper in his craft and further proved what his capabilities on
the baseball diamond were.
Having to travel to the Lone Star State for the weekend, it was all worth the hype in
representing Ram Nation. Not only did his family make the trip, but so did prominent Riverview
Rams’ Varsity baseball head coach Jeremy Schmidt. Schmidt, who pitched in
the minor leagues for the San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds from 2002-2006, has acted
as a fabulous mentor and has supplied impeccable experience to Ligon.
Schmidt speaks about Ligon as he expresses that “Karson is the ideal player you want to coach.
He is a student of the game and is always willing to learn and improve. His work ethic is
admirable. In the four years I have coached Karson, he has transformed himself into one of the
top pitchers in the nation. The entire coaching staff could not be prouder of Karson and how he
represents the Riverview baseball program.”
Both men have persevered through arm injuries and failed to let these moments oscillate their
masterful repertoires. While Ligon did have to rehab for an extreme amount of time, this
didn’t stop him from chasing his dreams of one day playing in the MLB. His pitching line was
incredibly solid as even though he pitched 1 inning and struck out 1 batter.
“His fastball was topping out at 93 mph and sat in between 89-92 mph,” Schmidt said.
Recollecting his eventful weekend from Texas, Ligon said that he got to be part of a team “with
the 40 best players in the nation.”
“I realized what it will take to make it to the next level in the pros. I feel my performance was
good, but I still have lots to improve on in being the best version of myself,” Ligon said.
