Since the pandemic began in 2020, many major events were cancelled, although the Grammy awards still took place on March 14, awarding many popular artists, while also including many performances.
Starting off with record of the year, Billie Ellis achieved her seventh Grammy for her song, “Everything I Wanted.” Other nominees for this award included Beyoncé, DaBaby, Doja Cat, Dua Lipa and Post Malone.
Tenth grade Riverview student Madison Castellano claims that she was hoping Beyoncé would have won the Grammy, but she said she is overall surprised Billie won because the amount of competition towards this award.
The album of the year award was given to Taylor Swift, for her album Folklore. During her award speech, Taylor thanked many of her song writers, producers and fans. Coldplay, Jhené Aiko, Black Pumas, Jacob Collier, HAIM, Dua Lipa and Post Malone were also nominated for this award.
Another sophomore student, Arianna Costello, was happy that Taylor Swift won this award and said, “she is a hard worker, since she has managed to publish quality albums over a short span of time. She is such a talented artist.”
Moving on to song of the year, “I Can’t Breathe” by H.E.R won this award, running against Roddy Rich, Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and more.
Mairead Dempsey ‘24 explains that she had never even heard of the artist H.E.R., while other nominees were familiar.
Other achievements were rewarded to Megan Thee Stallion for best new artist. Harry Styles’ “Watermelon Sugar” won best pop solo performance. Best pop duo/group performance was “Rain on Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande.
Finally, James Taylor managed to win best traditional pop vocal album, for his album American Standard. After many other nominees, Dua Lipa managed to win best pop vocal album for her album Future Nostalgia.
Overall, many artists were recognized and appreciated during the 2021 Grammys, but many popular artists also performed. Trevor Noah hosted the Grammy awards, while artists such as Bad Bunny, Cardi B, BTS, Doja Cat, Lil Baby, Roddy Rich, Taylor Swift and many more performed. The Grammys awards were viewed by 8.8 million Americans on live television, which dropped from 18 million the previous year.
