Everybody has their own special family recipe. It can be a recipe for a delicious pie or a scrumptious dinner meal. These Hungarian cucumbers in particular are amazing in every way!
This recipe comes from a long line of Hungarian descents. Beth Courson, a resident of Sarasota, Florida, learned how to make Magyar uborka, or Hungarian cucumbers, from her grandmother when she was a little girl.
Fun fact, there is no written recipe for this dish. Courson had to memorize every little detail so that this delicious side meal would be perfect. We were lucky enough to get a written version of the ingredients and steps on how to make it.
Now you may be wondering, why is this recipe so important to her? This recipe is very special to her because it reminds her of her Hungarian grandmother who made them on every holiday. Obviously, this recipe hits awfully close to the heart during the holidays for the Courson family.
In order to make this delicious Hungarian dish, you will need 20 small baby cucumbers, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, ¾ of a cup of sour cream, 1 tablespoon of salt, 1/8 teaspoon of pepper, and ¼ teaspoon of paprika. These ingredients are present at any local grocery store like Walmart or Target.
The beginning process of this dish is fairly simple. You would want to start out with peeling and cutting the cucumbers. While cutting, you want to make sure that they are cut very thinly so that they will be very crunchy in the end.
Secondly, you would want to put the sliced cucumbers into a container to sit overnight. Before refrigerating, though, you would want to put ½ tablespoon of salt into the container so that all the water is out of the cucumbers. This will make them crisp and crunchy!
After the cucumbers have no excess liquid left, you can add the ¾-cup of sour cream, the 2 tablespoons of vinegar, ½ tablespoon of salt, and 1/8 of pepper. This will give the cucumbers their exquisite and delicious taste.
Now, after all the ingredients are in, you can stir the mixture until it has an almost foamy like texture. If it is not thick enough, then you can add more sour cream. To top it off, add the ¼ teaspoon of paprika. This will give the Hungarian cucumbers their final taste!
In the end, this dish will surely blow you away. With the amazing taste and the crisp and crunchy cucumbers, Hungarian Cucumbers are a must have at every family event! Therefore, next time you can’t think of a dish to bring with you to Thanksgiving or Christmas, this recipe is the right way to go!
